Accelerometer

IPod touch responds to motion using a built-in accelerometer.

Responds to Movement
iPod touch detects when you rotate it from portrait to landscape, and then automatically changes the contents of the display. So you immediately see the entire width of a web page, view a photo in its proper aspect ratio, or control a game using only your movements.

How it Works
the accelerometer inside iPod touch uses three elements: silicon mass, a set of silicon springs, and an electrical current. The silicon springs measure the position of the silicon mass using the electrical current. Rotating iPod touch causes a fluctuation in the electrical current passing through the silicon springs. The accelerometer registers these fluctuations and tells iPod touch to adjust the display accordingly.

Green with envy

At the launch, Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a big hoohar about the green credentials of the new iPod touch: arsenic-free glass, Brominated flame retardant-free, mercury-free, PVC-free and a highly recyclable stainless steel enclosure.

But in reality nobody is going to buy an iPod touch because they think they’re saving the planet. Nobody even knows what Brominate is (it’s a chemical flame retardent applied to stop electronics, clothes and furniture catching fire -Ed), let alone why you’d want to be free of it.

You’re going to buy it because it’s the funnest iPod ever, oh yes. Just think about what this iPod can do: You can listen to music and play videos in iPod mode, watch YouTube videos and movies, download and play games from the App store, browse the internet over Wi-Fi using Safari and also get your email, buy music from the iTunes Store, utilise Google Maps (there’s no GPS location detection though), browse photos (but there’s no built-in camera) and install 3rd party apps that do just about everything else.
